Softball Eliminates Top-Seeded Otters, Falls to Yellow Jackets

SEASIDE, Calif. – Humboldt State softball opened its NCAA West Region elimination play with a 12-8 win over host Cal State Monterey Bay before ending its season with a 5-2 loss to Montana State-Billings in the nightcap at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Lumberjacks finish the season with 42-19 overall record and the program's third-straight 40-plus-win campaign. HSU also made its third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals in 2015.

In their seventh meeting of the season Humboldt State proved to be too much for West Region host Monterey Bay. The Green and Gold had lost its previous four meetings with the Otters.

Otter ace Cori Reinhardt did not escape the first inning of the afternoon's first elimination game. She surrendered three runs and left after facing seven batters. Reinhardt suffered the loss, her fourth of the season (30-4).

Tiffany Hollingsworth led HSU's offensive attack and hit two home runs against Otter reliever Lindsey Clarkson. The San Leandro, Calif., native finished with three hits and five RBI.

Katie Obbema picked up the complete game victory for the Jacks. She surrendered eight runs, five earned, and fanned three.

Four Jacks had multi-hit games against Monterey Bay – Darian Harris, Dani Randall, Hannah Williams and Carly Perkins each finished with a pair of hits.

Less than 20 minutes after the first game the Green and Gold took the field against the Yellow Jackets.

The key to Montana State-Billings success was the return of ace Jessyka MacDonald who left the team's earlier loss to Sonoma State with an apparent ankle injury. MacDonald winced her way through a complete-game victory against the Jacks, her 21st of the season (21-7).

A two-base error gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and a Kelsey Devlin solo shot extended the advantage to 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

The Jacks knotted the score at two runs apiece with RBI singles from Harris and Hollingsworth in the fourth frame.

Aubrey Conceicao slugged a mammoth three-run homer over the left-centerfield wall in the sixth to seal the win for the Yellow Jacks and eliminate the North Coast squad.

Madison Williams took the loss for HSU. She relieved Obbema after three innings of work and gave up four runs. Williams also struck out eight and allowed one walk. The Brentwood, Calif., product finished the season with a 19-8 record.

The winner of Sunday's championship round between Sonoma State and Montana State-Billings will advance to St. George, Utah, for NCAA Super Regional play.
