Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Goal Propels Men’s Soccer to First Victory

OAKLAND, Calif. – With under five minutes left in the match, the Humboldt State men's soccer team (1-2-0) broke the scoreless tie and secured its first win of the 2015 season. The Lumberjacks defeated Holy Names (1-2-0) with a shutout and the lone goal off the foot of senior Luke Bunjovac in the 85th minute.

"Holy Names was organized and made today's game very difficult," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "The first half in particular was very frustrating for us, but our guys stuck with it and came out and played much better in the second half."

The difficult first half had Holy Names outshooting the Jacks, 9-1. Freshman goalkeeper Christopher Cherms made all four of his saves in that opening period en route to his first collegiate win and shutout.

With time seemingly running out, Humboldt played a swinging ball into the box in hopes of making something happen. Both the Holy Names goalkeeper, Kevin Gonzalez, and HSU forward, Riki Michael, went up to meet the ball as it came in. Michael's head made contact before the keeper could and softly dropped the ball behind him to Bunjovac. The senior defender took one touch to redirect the bouncing ball into the back of the net for his first goal with the Green and Gold.

"It was great to get our first win," added Jungemann. "Hopefully we can use this to build confidence for the next game."

HSU will stay in the Bay Area through Saturday, when it gets the chance to play CCAA opponent Stanislaus State in a rare non-conference showdown. The game in Turlock, Calif., will kick off at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The two sides will meet in Arcata as part of the conference schedule on Oct. 25.
