HONOLULU – The Humboldt State volleyball team (2-2) evened its record after dropping the final match in Hawaii to Chaminade (4-0) in four sets. All four sets remained close, finishing within two or three points each time (25-22, 24-25, 24-26, 25-22).
"It was another hard fought loss for our team tonight," said Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "Chaminade was athletic and they played great defense, and we needed to execute better at times. We had chances that we didn't convert at crunch time, which cost us that set."
The Lumberjacks claimed the first set after jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead and later rallied for five consecutive points to go ahead 12-7. After a back-and-forth remainder of the set, an
Alex Hasenstab kill clinched the game for HSU.
Despite holding the initial lead, the next three sets did not go Humboldt State's way. Set two was tied at 23, and set three was knotted at 24 apiece, but the Jacks couldn't break through and earn the key points late.
Kaitlyn Dunaway was Humboldt's bright spot on the night. The senior led the team with 22 kills, hitting .226, and recording a pair of aces from the service line, for a match-high 25 total points.
"Overall this weekend our girls played their hearts out," said Wood. "I'm proud of the effort and I look forward to getting another week of practice in before beginning conference play."
This match concluded nonconference play for the Jacks. The CCAA season will be the focus now as HSU has five of six September games away from Lumberjack Arena.
