Women’s Basketball Prepares for Weekend Trip South

ARCATA, Calif. – The travel-filled month of January continues for the Humboldt State women's basketball program. After earning a home split last weekend, the Lumberjacks (7-8, 4-4) hit the road to make its first of two consecutive trips to Southern California.

The Green and Gold open with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night in the lone regular-season matchup scheduled between the two teams. The following night, the Jacks will play at Cal State Los Angeles, a team HSU lost to in its California Collegiate Athletic Association home opener earlier this season. Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m., with live stats and video streams available online.

"We have the tools, but we just haven't been consistent at both ends," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "We just worry about one game. We're focused on a really good, super athletic Dominguez team. They have a few all-conference players in Breanne Garcia and Monay Lee, so they are tough players we really have to focus on."

The Toros (9-6, 7-0) have rattled off six consecutive wins, and have not dropped a game since playing No. 4 California Baptist in late November. Dominguez Hills is one of two unbeaten teams in CCAA games, along with Cal State East Bay, and averages the conference's second most points per game (68.6). The Toros' plus-3.07 turnover margin is best is the conference.

Since Cal State LA (3-10, 1-6) defeated HSU, 88-74, in early December, the Golden Eagles have hit a rough patch. Los Angeles has lost six straight games dating back to their visit to Lumberjack Arena, and sits at the bottom of the CCAA standings as one of three teams with a single conference win. Cal State LA allows the conference's most points per game (72.5) and the highest opponent three-point shooting percentage (36.5 percent).

"We need to put the ball in the basket consistently," said Gleason. "Whether it is inside or outside, being able to play against really good teams and execute when we are defended well will make a difference."

Humboldt will make a return trip south on Jan. 23 to face Cal Poly Pomona before returning to the North Coast for home games on Jan. 28 and 30 against UC San Diego and Cal State San Bernardino, respectively.
