Toros Overcome Deficit, Top Men’s Basketball 91-83 in Overtime

CARSON, Calif. – Cal State Dominguez Hills snapped its four-game losing streak as it overcame a 20-point deficit to shock Humboldt State men's basketball 91-83 Friday in the Torodome.

The Lumberjacks slipped to 12-3 overall and 6-3 in conference play with the loss. Dominguez Hills improved to 8-8 and 2-6 versus California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents.

Despite leading by as many as 20 points in the first half, HSU led by just five, 31-26, at the break.

Colin Caslick sank a 3-pointer with 6:54 left in the half to put the Green and Gold up by 20, 31-11. It was HSU's last field goal before intermission.

The Toros had a lackluster shooting performance for the first 14 minutes of play, but caught fire late. Dominguez Hills scored 18 straight points and erased the HSU lead at the beginning of the second half.

"Dominguez Hills did a nice job adjusting its defense and got hot shooting," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "They held their ground and didn't give up."

The second half featured nine lead changes, but Tyras Rattler scored the final five points to force overtime.

"We put ourselves in position to win the game in regulation," said Kinder. "We executed our last-second play, but the ball didn't go in the hoop."

Dominguez Hills outscored HSU 25-17 in the overtime period, and the Toros scored 22 of their 25 points at the free-throw line.

"We put them at the foul line too many times," said Kinder. "The Toros did a nice job putting the game away from the free-throw line."

Rakim Brown scored a layup with 2:26 left in overtime to give the Jacks their only lead in the final five minutes of play, 78-77. Brown finished the game with a double-double and scored 16 points to go with 13 rebounds.

Five Toros scored in double figures Friday. Vincent Golson led all scorers with 26 points on 7-of-14 shooting. He was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line.

HSU shot 47.6 percent from the free-throw line and converted just 10-of-21 attempts. The Jacks were outrebounded by their opponent in their third consecutive game. The Toros won the rebounding battle 48-40.

"When you are on the road, it is not easy to go to the line and knock down free throws," said Kinder. "Our players have been working hard to improve at the free throw line and have shot over 900 free throws during the break."

Lizotte led the Green and Gold in scoring with a season-high 18 points and scored 13 in the first half. The freshman logged just 15 minutes after the break due to foul trouble. He connected on 3-of-7 shots from outside the arc.

"I am proud of Nikhil's performance," said Kinder. "He got the keys from the coaching staff three times this week to do some extra shooting. I am not surprised by the result."

The Jacks have a quick turnaround and continue their road trip with a visit to Cal State Los Angeles Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

"We will go through our typical game-day preparation tomorrow," said Kinder. "This is just life in the CCAA. We will face another team with a desire to win tomorrow night. Win or lose, we need to get back to playing Lumberjack basketball against Cal State LA."
