Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Can’t Find Form Late in Loss to San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Humboldt State's women's basketball program is still searching for its first win of 2016. The Lumberjacks (6-7, 3-3) fell to Cal State San Bernardino (6-4, 3-3), 73-47, on Saturday night. The Coyote win was the largest margin of victory in series history.

"It was very strange, we were up five, and then the wheels fell off the bus," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "We committed a lot of turnovers, unforced errors, and missed a lot of shots. The turnovers resulted in easy points for them, which built momentum, and we were never able to recover.

Tied at 3-3 early, San Bernardino went on a 12-2 run over the course of the first quarter to push the game to double digits. HSU trailed by seven at the end of the opening period, 15-8.

After the lead was pushed to 13 points in the second quarter, the Green and Gold responded with a 10-0 run over the final 4:34 of the half to bring the score to 28-25 heading into intermission.

HSU continued the run and took its first lead of the game following a made Jessica Johnson three and a pair of free throws by senior Amanda Kunst. The Jacks extended the lead to their largest of the game on a Kunst made layup with 6:06 remaining in the third quarter, making it a 35-30 game. The Coyotes again had an answer, scoring 15 unanswered, and reclaiming the 10-point advantage.

An eight-point game heading into the fourth quarter, San Bernardino never let its lead shrink to lower than six and pushed it to a game-high 26 points in the game's final minute.

"I have to watch the film, but we need to take care of the ball and make sure we get good shots going forward," said Gleason. "The positive from this weekend is that Teylor McMiller had a great two games and found her rhythm offensively."

McMiller was 5-for-8 from the field and finished with 10 points and eight boards on Saturday. Kiana Brown and San Bernardino's Chelsea Barnes shared game-high honors with 14 points apiece. Kunst collected 11 rebounds, and Johnson dished out a career-high seven assists.

San Bernardino shot 44.4 percent (8-for-18) from three, the highest percentage against HSU this season. Humboldt's 47 points, 17 made field goals, and 26.6 shooting percentage are all season lows.

HSU returns to Arcata this week for a pair of conference games. The Green and Gold host Chico State on Jan. 7 and Stanislaus State on Jan. 9. Both games are scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m. at Lumberjack Arena.
