ARCATA, Calif. – It took a season-high 80 points, 12 of which came in the extra period, for the Humboldt State women's basketball to get back into the win column. The Lumberjacks (9-7, 6-7) knocked off Cal State San Bernardino (10-8, 7-7) in overtime, 80-73, on Saturday night.
The Jacks built up first quarter leads of as high as six points twice, once on a layup by
Teylor McMiller with 2:03 to play and again of the next possession thanks to a
Kindall Murie offensive rebound and put back. Despite the edge, the Coyotes hit back-to-back shots to close out the quarter and trailed HSU, 19-18, after one.
Similarly, in the second quarter, it was San Bernardino with a seven-point edge 2:30 remaining before halftime. The Green and Gold were able to chip away, thanks to consecutive threes from
Sophie Northern. The freshman finished perfect from the field, going 3-for-3 from long range to tally a career-best nine points. HSU went into the locker rooms trailing 34-31 at the half.
After San Bernardino's scored the first points of the second half, the Jacks went on a 12-0 run sparked by three triples from
Jessica Johnson, to retake the lead, 43-36. The senior matched her career-high with 12 points and set a new career-best with four made three pointers. Humboldt capitalized on another big stretch, this time an 8-0 run, to push the lead to 53-41 with 4:34 to play in the third. HSU would head into the fourth ahead, 58-45.
After Northern pushed the lead to a game-high 14 to start the fourth, the Coyotes were able to hang around and ultimately took the lead with 43 seconds remaining in regulation, 68-66. The home team called a timeout and drew up a play for
Kiana Brown to score the game-tying layup with 20 seconds left. Brown finished with 18 points and was one of five Lumberjacks to finish in double-figures.
San Bernardino jumped out early in the overtime period, scoring the extra session's first five points. The Jacks did not panic and finished with the game's final 12 points, including 8-for-8 from
Kiana Brown at the charity stripe.
The Jacks leave the North Coast to start February, with games at San Francisco State on Feb. 5 and at Sonoma State the following night.
