Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Comeback Effort Falls Short Versus Stanislaus State

ARCATA, Calif. – For the second consecutive game, Humboldt State women's basketball needed a fourth quarter comeback to each the conference victory. Unlike Thursday's win over Chico State, the Lumberjacks (7-8, 4-4) came up short on Saturday against Stanislaus State, falling 68-59.

"Rebounding was huge in the first half," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "Our defense did a nice job forcing tough shots, but we didn't close out possessions and grab rebounds."

The Jacks got out to a quick 7-0 start, with baskets coming from Kiana Brown, Kelci Haueter, and Neika Puryear. Despite the early sharp shooting, the Green and Gold failed to make another field goal the rest of the period. Stanislaus State closed out the quarter on an 11-2 run, with HSU's points coming off a pair of Amanda Kunst free throws.

The Warriors added a basket to start the second quarter and extend their lead to four, but a Haueter layup and a successful trip to the charity stripe by A'Jaee Foster tied the game at 13. Stanislaus again had a response, and rattled off eight consecutive points. The Jacks scored the next five points, capped by a steal and fast break layup for Sophie Northern, before the Warriors again closed out the quarter on a run. Stanislaus scored eight of the half's final ten points, with Northern's third bucket of the quarter being the lone HSU points in that stretch. Stanislaus carried a 31-20 advantage into the locker room.

Stanislaus opened the third quarter by pushing its lead to a game-high 14 points before the Green and Gold began to chip away. With 1:43 left in the period, the Jacks found themselves down just three, thanks to a Puryear layup. Again, Stanislaus responded, and carried a 44-37 lead into the final quarter.

Despite the HSU effort to make a final comeback, the fourth quarter deficit remained between seven and 12 points, ending at 68-59.

"Cal State Stanislaus is a very good team," said Gleason. "They pressure very well."

Amanda Kunst led the Jacks in scoring for the ninth time this season, with her 15 points. Brown added 13 points.

Haueter hit the double figure mark with 10 points for the first time in her Green and Gold career after earning her first start since the season-opener against Seattle Pacific. Northern also had a career night with six points on three made field goals.

Humboldt tied its season-high with five blocked shots, with Teylor McMiller accounting for her season-high with four. Foster corralled 12 rebounds, including a career-best 11 on the defensive glass, to go along with her eight points.

Humboldt State will next make two consecutive weekend trips to Southern California, beginning with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles on Jan 15 and 16, respectively.
