Football Ready to Host Simon Fraser

ARCATA, Calif. – Seeking its first home win of the season, Humboldt State football hosts Simon Fraser Saturday in Redwood Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Lumberjacks are coming off their second nationally-televised win this season, a 42-37 victory on the road against Western Oregon. HSU has a 4-4 overall record this season and is 2-4 against Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams. Despite a 4-1 mark on the road this season, the North Coast squad is still searching for a positive result at home.

"We are excited to be home," said head coach Rob Smith. "We've been on the road two straight weeks. We know that our fans that come out in great numbers to support and enjoy the Saturday evening at the Redwood Bowl have been disappointed with the outcome of the first three home games. So we are excited to get back home and hopefully give our fans that performance and outcome that they've become accustomed to and we're certainly capable of that."

Simon Fraser tangled with HSU earlier this season, and it put together one of its best offensive performances in the team's 56-24 loss. Nothing has come easy for the Clan, and last week's game against No. 17 Azusa Pacific illustrates that fact. Simon Fraser did not allow an offensive touchdown to the GNAC leader in the first half. But the Clan trailed 28-0 at the break after four costly turnovers resulted in easy points for the Cougars.

Jalen Jana is the Clan's top rusher and led the offense with a career-high 262 yards on 29 carries in the last meeting with the Jacks. Jana notched a rushing and passing touchdown in the Sept. 17 loss. The Simon Fraser offense has been lackluster in 2016, and it has managed just 17 points in the first half all season.

The key to Simon Fraser's success in recent years has been the production of All-American linebacker Jordan Herdman. He leads the GNAC with 83 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss, and he became the conference's all-time tackles leader two weeks ago at Western Oregon. Justin Herdman, Jordan's brother and fellow linebacker, is another player to watch on the Clan defense.

"Simon Fraser has obviously struggled," said Smith. "They are winless this year up to this point, but they have talent. They have two very good linebackers in the Herdman brothers. One was Defensive Player of the Year in this conference last season on a winless football team. Simon Fraser, I said it first time around I'll say it again, is going to beat somebody in this league soon. We just don't want it to be us."

HSU has had its own share of offensive setbacks this year, but last week's win over Western Oregon looked like a step in the right direction for the injury-hampered unit. Robert Webber passed for 357 yards, four touchdowns and an interception in the win. He connected with speedy wideout John Todd 12 times for 141 yards, both career-high totals, and a touchdown. Running back Ja'Quan Gardner churned out 67 yards on the ground to go with two rushing scores.

"Western Oregon has been a difficult place over the years to win," said Smith. "I have taken some very good teams up there. I think back to 2011, we were 9-1 that season and our one loss was up at Western Oregon. We have always found it, for whatever reason, to be a difficult place and usually because Western Oregon has got a good team. They have a good team this year, and I am very proud of our players to rally and make the plays needed to win the game."

Saturday's game will be the annual breast cancer awareness game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness, and Lumberjack players and coaches will be wearing pink to support the cause.
