HSU Volleyball Outlasts Pioneers in Five

ARCATA, Calif. – After dropping the first two sets to Cal State East Bay Thursday night, Humboldt State volleyball claimed a five-set victory over the Pioneers (22-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18, 15-11) in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
 
With the win, the Lumberjacks improve to 12-13 overall and 7-10 in the CCAA. The Pioneers fall to 13-13 overall and 9-9.
 
"Tonight was a very good comeback by the girls," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "It was the most complete five sets of volleyball we played all season. We played with intensity and intelligence, and it made for a really good match."
 
Alex Lolland led Humboldt with a team-high 20 kills and hit .286, while Jessica Lammers recorded 33 assists for the Lumberjacks. On the defensive side of the net, Symone Hayden recorded 22 digs while Lammers chipped in with 16 and Sarah Shively added 15 for the Green and Gold.
 
In the opening set, a 6-1 Cal State East Bay run gave the Pioneers a lead they would not relinquish as they went on to 25-22 win. The Lumberjacks hit .278 for the set and were led by seven assists from Lammers and five kills from Lolland.
 
With the score tied at 25-25 in the second set, the Pioneers battled back and claimed the next two points. Behind seven second-set kills from Deja Thompson, Cal State East Bay entered the intermission with a 2-0 lead.
 
In the third set, the Green and Gold got off to a fast start, building an early 8-0 lead. Cal State East Bay fought back and tied the set at 17 before an 8-3 Lumberjack run closed out the third. Lammers recorded eight assists in the set while Hayden recorded six kills.
 
The Jacks momentum carried over into the fourth set.  HSU captured a 25-18 victory, despite only hitting .125, to force a decisive fifth set.
 
In the final set, Humboldt State once again jumped out to an early lead, only to see the Pioneers claw their way back to within 2 points at 11-9. The Green and Gold went on a 4-2 run, and an Alex Hasenstab kill closed out the match 15-11.
                                                                                                          
For the match, Humboldt State hit .249 and recorded 65 kills. The defense recorded 12 blocks and 84 digs.

The Jacks finish up their schedule for 2016 against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena. The match will serve as the final appearance for five Lumberjack student-athletes. Seniors Nicole Bewley, Katherine Rifilato, Alondra Haro, Hasenstab and Hayden will be recognized in a pre-match ceremony.
