ARCATA, Calif. – A pair of 19-point performances from
Paris Davis and
Tyras Rattler Jr. helped Humboldt State men's basketball defeat Oregon Tech 88-74 Tuesday night in Lumberjack Arena.
"This win should give us momentum," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "We just played a very good team, and we told our guys that beforehand. Oregon Tech is going to win a lot of games."
The Lumberjacks (2-1) returned home from a weekend road trip and got off to a slow start against the Hustlin' Owls. The home team struggled to find its shot and connected on just 39.5 percent of its field goals in the first half.
Oregon Tech scored the final four points of the half and carried a 42-38 lead into intermission. The first half featured six lead changes and five ties.
Rattler sank three 3-pointers within a one-minute stretch at the start of the second half to put the Jacks back on track. He finished the game with a team-high five 3-point baskets.
It wasn't just Rattler that found his rhythm after the halftime break. HSU connected on 6-of-11 shots from outside the arc and shot 65.5 percent from the field.
The Green and Gold led by as many as 14 points in the second half and never trailed in the final 16:49 of action.
Davis was HSU's most efficient offensive weapon. The Oakland, Calif., native was 8-of-10 shooting and hit 2-of-3 shots from outside the arc. He scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half.
Despite a height disadvantage, the Jacks outrebounded the Owls 44-34.
Calvin Young II led the Green and Gold with eight rebounds.
HSU continues its five-game homestand with a game versus Pacific Union Saturday, Nov. 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
