ARCATA, Calif. – Seeking its second win of the week, Humboldt State women's basketball fell just a little short Saturday when it lost to Academy of Art at the Cal State East Bay Thanksgiving Shootout. While able to close the deficit to under five points on multiple occasions in the second half, the Jacks suffered a 73-62 defeat to the Urban Knights.
Humboldt State shot 38 percent from the field (27-72) and recorded 30 points in the paint. Academy of Art (1-4) survived six ties and seven lead changes to eventually earn the victory over the Jacks (1-5).
Academy of Art jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, forcing a Jacks timeout. Following the timeout, HSU chipped away at the Urban Knights' lead and took an 11-9 lead after a
Riann Thayer layup at 5:17. Despite seven points by
Tyra Turner, Academy of Art held an 18-15 lead after the first quarter.
HSU opened the second quarter on a 5-2 run which forced Academy of Art to use an early timeout. The Urban Knights fought back after the timeout and entered the intermission with a 42-35 lead.
Catharine Rees led the Jacks with nine first half points.
In the third quarter, the Lumberjacks opened with a 12-3 run to give them a 47-45 lead at the media timeout. Academy of Art responded, reclaiming the lead after a pair of Jazzlyn Brewster 3-pointers and finishing out the period on a 10-2 run, giving the Urban Knights a 55-49 lead after three quarters.
In the final quarter, HSU cut the Urban Knights' lead to four on multiple occasions but Academy of Art held on and left Pioneer Gym with a 73-62 win.
Rees was the Jacks' top scorer and finished with 13 points while McMiller (12) and Turner (11) also scored in double figures.
Mikaela Shannon led the Green and Gold, dishing out three assists, and McMiller led the rebounding effort with nine while Turner chipped in with seven.
Academy of Arts' Tatiana Howard scored a game-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds and her teammate Alana Simon chipped in with 12 points.
Humboldt State will face Dominican in its final game of the Cal State East Bay Thanksgiving Shootout Sunday at 2 p.m.
