HAYWARD, Calif. – Looking to bounce back from an 11-point loss on Saturday, Humboldt State women's basketball fell behind in the first quarter and could not overcome a 20-point halftime deficit in its 81-70 loss to Dominican on Sunday. Trailing by as many as 28 in the second half, the Green and Gold furiously battled back in the second half before running out of time.
"I saw some positive things in the second half," said Head Coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "The girls showed some grit and got back into the game. Unfortunately in the first half we had several defensive breakdowns, which put us in a pretty deep hole. We will take a look at the film, learn from it, and get back to work."
Humboldt State shot 42 percent from three-point territory (8-19) and recorded 15 second chance points. Dominican (3-2) recorded 30 points in the paint and forced 10 steals to eventually earn the victory over the Jacks (1-6).
HSU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Penguins went on a 25-6 run to give them a lead they would not relinquish. The Lumberjacks then went on a 5-0 run to close out the quarter. Behind five points from
Catharine Rees, the Jacks trailed by seven after the first period, 25-18.
Dominican opened the second quarter on a 12-0 run before
Tyra Turner answered with a three pointer at 5:33. The Penguins entered the intermission with a 52-32 advantage. Rees led the Jacks with 10 first half points while Turner added nine points and five assists.
In the third quarter, the Lumberjacks outscored Dominican 19-17 and entered the fourth quarter trailing 69-51. In the final quarter, HSU outscored the Penguins 19-12 but Dominican held on to the lead and exited Pioneer Arena with an 81-70 win.
Turner was the Jacks' top scorer and finished with 15 points while Rees (14),
Kindall Murie (14) and
Teylor McMiller (10) also scored in double figures.
Mikaela Shannon led the Green and Gold rebounding efforts with 10 while Turner dished out seven assists for HSU.
Dominican's Sandra Ikeora scored a game-high 22 points to go with eight rebounds and her teammate Taylor Donnot chipped in with 16 points and six rebounds. Ashely Sorenson led the Penguins with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Humboldt State will return to conference play when it faces Cal State Los Angeles in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Friday, December 2. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
