Women’s Basketball Looks to Solidify Playoff Spot in Final Road Trip

ARCATA, Calif. – Three games remain on the Humboldt State women's basketball team's regular season schedule.. The Lumberjacks (12-12, 9-8) are currently in a tie for fifth place the California Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with Cal State San Bernardino and hope to continue their rise.

"It's a huge week," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "Every game now is so important with only three left. Stanislaus is one and a half games up on us in fourth. That's where we are trying to get to earn that home game in the tournament. It's definitely a tough road ahead. We have to take care of our business, and we need some help from other teams to get some losses."

The Jacks topped Chico State (10-12, 5-11), but lost to Stanislaus State (14-8, 10-6) earlier this year when the two opponents came to Lumberjack Arena. This weekend, the Green and Gold will face the two on back-to-back nights, traveling to Turlock on Friday and Chico on Saturday. Both games are scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m.

The Warriors are currently on a three-game slide, which includes an overtime loss to UC San Diego last Saturday in La Jolla. Although Stanislaus State's roster does not feature a player averaging more than nine points per game, the team's 64.0 points per game is a half point higher than HSU's 63.4 point average. The Warriors have a stout defense and rank second in the CCAA in both blocks and steals.

The Chico State game should provide a great collegiate basketball atmosphere. Not only do the Wildcats rank second in home attendance behind the Jacks, the rivalry game will also be Senior Night for Chico's lone senior, Brooke Bowen. The two-year Wildcat leads the team in steals and is second in both points and assists. Whitney Branham is the lone double-digit scorer for Chico State, averaging 11.4 points per game.

"Looking at the standings, there are so many things that can happen in the last two weeks," said Gleason. "There is a lot of shifting that can go on. This is probably the toughest road trip for us with the drive down to Turlock and then to turn around and play in Chico on Saturday."

The top four teams host first round CCAA Tournament games on their home court.

The Jacks will conclude the regular season on Feb. 25 with Senior Night at Lumberjack Arena against Cal State San Marcos. HSU has eight seniors on its roster.
