ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team found out its first round opponent on Saturday night as the final California Collegiate Athletic Association teams completed their regular seasons. The Lumberjacks will travel to Cal State East Bay to play the first round game Tuesday at 7 p.m.
"
We are excited to begin the next phase of the season," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "East Bay is a great team and will be a formidable opponent on Tuesday night. We are happy that we didn't have to travel all the way to Southern California, but playing in Hayward is going to be a big challenge. We only got one shot at them in the regular season, which we lost at home. There are several areas that we need to improve on including execution of the offense against tough defense. They are not going to give you anything easy so being patient and using the offense as a collective group is crucial. Defensively we can not lose track of their shooters as often as we did in the first game and we need to play with more urgency each possession of the game with fewer mental breakdowns. At this time in the season we won't be changing much of what we are doing, just trying to execute it better and keep improving." The Lumberjacks (13-14, 10-10) finished in a tie for fifth in the conference with Cal San Bernardino (13-12, 10-10), but will enter the CCAA Women's Basketball Tournament as the sixth seed. The Coyotes hold the tiebreaker between the two, despite splitting games in the regular season.
At the top of the standings, three teams tied for the regular-season title for the first time in conference history. Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, and UC San Diego all finished the year 18-2 in conference, with tiebreakers seeding the Toros first, the Tritons second, and the Pioneers third.
HSU and Cal State East Bay played just once this season, with the Pioneers earning a 61-50 win at Lumberjack Arena on Feb. 11. Despite the Green and Gold holding a 20-12 lead after the first quarter in that game, East Bay's conference-leading defense turned things around and was enough to push the visitor's to victory.
Cal State East Bay held teams to 35 percent shooting and 52.4 points per game in the regular season, both best in the CCAA.
The Pioneers have the fifth and sixth leading scorers in the conference on their roster in Tori Breshers (14.3 ppg) and Shannon Bland (13.7 ppg).
Amanda Kunst (12.9 ppg) finished 11
th in the conference and scoring and
Kiana Brown (11.9 ppg) finished the regular season in 15
th.
