Women’s Basketball Set For Penultimate Road Trip

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team has an opportunity to complete two season sweeps this weekend as it travels to play San Francisco State on Friday and Sonoma State on Saturday. The Lumberjacks (9-11, 6-7) defeated both teams back in December, early in the California Collegiate Athletic Association season.

"It's been a while," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "Most teams are very different at this point in the season. I expect them to be much improved. Every time that we play at SF State and Sonoma, they are always great games."

Despite earning a win in its last home game, San Francisco State (5-14, 3-10) has lost seven of its last eight and 12 of its last 14. The pair of wins during that stretch each came in victories over Cal State Monterey Bay. The Gators are last in the CCAA in points scored, averaging just 50.5 per game, 13.5 less than the Jacks. The offensive woes can be contributed to the conference's lowest shooting percentage from the field (32.2 percent) and long range (25.1 percent). Senior guard Tatsiana Dashkevich is lone Gator averaging double figure points, scoring 11 per game.

Sonoma State (8-14, 3-10) may be tied with San Francisco State at the bottom of the conference, but the Seawolves are a different team when playing in Ronhert Park. Sonoma is an even 5-5 on its home court, compared to 1-7 away from The Wolves' Den. The Lumberjacks may have their outside game impacted, as the Seawolves allow opponents to shoot just 26.9 percent from outside the arc, second lowest percentage in the CCAA. In the first meeting, the Lumberjacks capitalized on points off turnovers, outscoring Sonoma 17-6 in that category.

"We do take a look at the standings at where people are and what we need to do to meet our goals down the stretch," said Gleason. "I would hope our team realizes how important each game is. Our veteran players can reiterate that it doesn't matter where a team ranks. On any given night we can win or lose a game."

Both games will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Jacks return home to the North Coast after the weekend and host Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday and Friday, respectively. During halftime of the men's game on Feb. 11, Humboldt State will recognize student athlete with high academic achievement from the previous year. The annual Play 4 Kay Breast Cancer awareness pink game will be held on Saturday, Feb. 13. More information to come.
