ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State women's basketball has trailed in the last minute of the fourth quarter in each of its last four wins. The Lumberjacks (11-11, 8-7) came back in both games last week to earn a pair of victories, including a double-overtime win on Saturday night, and look to carry the momentum back home with games on Thursday and Saturday. Both games will tip at 5:30 p.m.
"It's tough in an unbalanced schedule," said Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. "We haven't played East Bay or Monterey Bay, and we only get one shot at them. This late in the year, you are grappling for every spot you can get. We are all in on our first game. Then when that's over, we move on to the next one."
Cal State East Bay (19-4, 13-2) enters the week in a tie for second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, having won a conference-high six consecutive games and 17 of its last 19. The Pioneer defense allows 52.6 points per game, the lowest in the CCAA, and relies of its conference-leading 36.3 percent shooting from long range. Tori Breshers leads East Bay with 14.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
On Saturday, Cal State Monterey Bay (8-14, 4-11) visits Lumberjack Arena for the annual Play4Kay Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Game. The Otters will travel to the North Coast following a trip south to Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday. Monterey Bay is last in the CCAA in turnover margin at -3.00 per game. HSU will be warming up in pink shirts courtesy of Solo Sports, and the Otters too will don pink accessories.
"It was not easy," said Gleason. "Our conference is too tough. It's tough for us to score and be consistent enough to break away. We never expect to lose, and our players have shown a lot of grit."
The Green and Gold are in the final stretch of the season, with just five scheduled games remaining before the conference tournament. The top eight teams qualify for the CCAA Tournament with the top four teams hosting the first round games on March 1.
