Women’s Basketball’s Season Ends Despite Playing Co-Champs Tough

HAYWARD, Calif. – The sixth seed Humboldt State women's basketball team showed tremendous effort against the conference Co-Champions in the first round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. The Lumberjacks (13-15, 10-10) closed out the season after losing 57-51 to Cal State East Bay (25-4, 18-2) on the road.

"I am so proud of the effort this team put forward today against a very good Cal State East Bay team," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "It was the most physical game we've played in, and East Bay handled the physicality better than us. They were better finishing in the paint, and their physical defense forced 18 turnovers that resulted in easy baskets."

Tori Breshers pushed the home team ahead 11-6 with two of her team-high 20 points at the 3:23 mark of the first quarter. The Green and Gold chipped away and only trailed by a point at the end of the period, 13-12.

The Jacks carried their run to end the first into the second and pushed it to eight unanswered, to take the lead 16-13.

The Jacks fought through six different lead changes in the game, and took a 26-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

Down a point with 5:25 to play in the third, Kiana Brown knocked down a triple to give the edge back to HSU, 33-31. Brown finished with a game-high 21 points, including 5-of-12 shooting from long range.

The Pioneers clawed back and took a four-point advantage into the final quarter, 37-33.  After East Bay pushed its lead to a game-high nine points with 8:28 to play in the game, the Jacks again provided an answer. The Green and Gold scored six unanswered to make it 44-41 with 3:25 to play. With HSU forced to foul, East Bay was able to pull away for the win, 57-51, bringing Humboldt State's season to a close.

A'Jaee Foster corralled a game-high 10 rebounds and combined with Teylor McMiller to record six of HSU's seven blocks.

"Our kids battled all night and did not make it easy on them," said Gleason. "We were prepared to make a run in the tournament and are very disappointed. Each of our seniors made a lasting impact on me and on this program. They will be missed."

Humboldt State loses eight seniors to graduation.
