MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Humboldt State men's basketball team's historic postseason run ended Friday. No. 1 seed and NCAA West Regional host Western Oregon proved to be too much for the Lumberjacks in the 82-65 loss.
"They were making shots, and they were a very good basketball team," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "We thought that we defended them well, made our adjustments and threw all the cards at them. They are a tough opponent and this environment was tough to play in."
The Green and Gold scored the first five points of the game, which included a game-opening trey from
Rakim Brown, but the Wolves quickly regained their home-court advantage.
Western Oregon rattled off nine straight points in a 14-2 run that powered it to a 14-9 lead with 13:56 on the clock. Tanner Omlid scored seven of his team-leading 14 first half points during the stretch.
Early foul trouble for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's two-time Player of the Year Andy Avgi put him on the bench early, but didn't slow the Wolves. He had six points on 2-of-5 shooting in 13 minutes of first half action.
An Omlid 3-pointer with 1:14 left before break gave Western Oregon a nine-point advantage, 42-33, which matched its largest lead of the half. The Wolves shot 58.3 percent from the field in the first half, and they went a perfect 11-for-11 at the charity stripe.
HSU went 2-of-11 from 3-point range in the first half with its only long-range baskets coming from Brown and
Malik Morgan. The Jacks finished the day 2-of-18 from outside the arc, and made their fewest 3-point field goals in a single game this season.
The Wolves relied on Devon Alexander to put the game away after the break. He scored 10 points and helped Western Oregon keep its distance from the rallying Green and Gold.
HSU narrowed the Western Oregon advantage to six points with 6:12 left in the half, but that was as close as the Jacks got.
A Julian Nichols jumper with 2:32 to go ended a 7-0 run for the Wolves and put the game out of reach. Nichols scored eight of his 17 points in the second half.
Four of Western Oregon's starters finished with double-figure scoring totals, and the group was led by Omlid with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Brown notched his team-leading 11
th double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Morgan was 9-of-11 shooting and scored 20 points.
"I am extremely proud of this team," said Kinder. "We have some great seniors that we just talked with in the locker room. Because of our run as of late, we had some special moments. Saying I am proud would be putting it in a very soft way. I am more than proud, this was a legendary group."
