ARCATA, Calif. – The Lumberjacks will be rested and prepared when they start California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Tournament play this weekend at Arnaiz Stadium. Top-seeded Humboldt State will face No. 4 seed UC San Diego on Friday, April 29, at 3 p.m.
After canceling last week's series due to inclement weather, the North Coast squad travels south to Stockton, Calif., with a 20-game winning streak in tow. HSU is making its fourth consecutive Tournament appearance and has captured a league-best three titles, including one in 2014.
"We are excited heading into this weekend and starting postseason," said Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "I just tell them to go out there and play their game. They can't worry about any outside pressure."
UC San Diego split its regular season series with HSU, and the Tritons trail in the all-time series 38-17. The two teams met on March 31 for a doubleheader at Rainbow Fields in Modesto, Calif., prior to the Tournament of Champions. HSU edged UC San Diego, 5-4, in the opener behind an outstanding 10-inning effort from pitcher
Katie Obbema. The Tritons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap and held off a Jacks rally in the 6-5 result.
"San Diego is a scrappy program," said Sarchett. "They don't have a lot of power, but they like to put pressure on you on the bases. My girls are really excited about seeing San Diego again. We didn't play like we should have played in our doubleheader split earlier this season."
The postseason is nothing new for either program. UC San Diego missed out on the conference tournament last year, but it had advanced the previous four seasons. HSU is primed for a long postseason run and it ranks No. 1 in the West Regional Rankings released last week. The Jacks have already exceeded last season's win total and aim to advance further into the NCAA Tournament than a year ago.
A strong showing at the CCAA Tournament will only reinforce the Jacks standing as one of the nation's elite programs. HSU ranked third in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. Three Jacks,
Katie Obbema,
Madison Williams and
Hanna Holland, were honored as NFCA Player of the Year Finalists last week. HSU was the only CCAA program with a Player of the Year Finalist and led the nation with three representatives.
Live video, statistics and audio will be available for each of the Jacks' postseason games, and they will air live on ESPN 92.7 FM / 1340 AM. Softball games will also stream live on Facebook at Facebook.com/hsujacks.
