STOCKTON, Calif. – Humboldt State softball fell behind early and was unable to complete the late rally as it was edged by UC San Diego 6-4 Friday in the first round of California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament play.
The loss forces the Green and Gold into a "win or go home" situation. HSU will face the loser of Friday night's Chico State/Sonoma State contest Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Luckily for the Jacks, they haven't lost back-to-back games this season and have no plans to pack up and head back to the North Coast.
"Today was a rough day, but nothing we can't come back from," said Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "These girls know that they are capable of coming back from anything as long as they keep their heads up and continue to fight."
CCAA Pitcher of the Year
Katie Obbema started in the circle for the Jacks. She gave up a pair of runs with two outs in the first, and the senior yielded four more runs on just two hits in the fourth frame.
HSU's rally began in the bottom of the fourth.
Tiffany Hollingsworth opened the inning with a lead off triple and came home on a
Kalyn Paque ground out to trim the Tritons lead to 6-1.
Darian Harris crossed the plate for the Jacks' second run in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, the senior catcher scored on a fourth ball over the head of the UC San Diego catcher. But the Jacks were limited to just one run as Hollingsworth was thrown out going from first to third on the wild pitch.
Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth,
Breonna Bejaran crushed a two-run homer to left centerfield to pull the Jacks within two. She finished the game with a team-high three hits and two RBI.
Obbema took just her third loss of the season. She logged 3.1 innings, surrendered five hits and six runs, three of which were earned.
Madison Williams provided 3.2 innings of dominating relief. The junior fanned seven and held the Tritons to only one hit.
HSU outhit UC San Diego 9-6. Hollingsworth and
Illa Haley each had multi-hit outings.
The Jacks return to action Saturday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m.
