ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State softball scored four runs in the seventh to defeat Cal Baptist, 6-2, Friday at HSU Softball Field. The Lumberjacks will advance to the NCAA West Regional Championship Round, which begins Saturday at noon.
"These guys know that they are a championship-caliber team, and so our team keeps fighting," said Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "They are fighters, and we don't let a deficit get us down. You can't count us out no matter where we are in the lineup. When the chips are down, they are going to fight."
Cal Baptist was the first to score when Ali Subia lifted a 1-1 pitch from HSU starter
Katie Obbema down the left field line for a home run to put the Lancers up by one.
Breonna Bejaran smashed a solo home run, her 10
th of the season, with one out in the fourth to put the Green and Gold on the board and even the score at 1-1.
"Bejaran is one of my mature athletes," said Sarchett. "She doesn't let things affect her. I can't say enough about her presence out there and what she brings to the table. We put her in the mix, and she is producing."
Cal Baptist answered Bejaran's long ball with a run in the bottom half of the fourth on a London Miller double.
Illa Haley put the Jacks back on top with an RBI single in the sixth. Bejaran opened the inning with a walk. Vigil pinch ran and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt then scored on a looping single into right field.
HSU tallied five hits in the four-run seventh. Bejaran, Haley and
Cyndi Chavez recorded run-scoring hits in the frame. Chavez's based-loaded, two-out single through the left side plated the fifth and sixth runs of the games for the Jacks.
Obbema tossed her 19
th complete game of the season and picked up her 21
st victory. The senior scattered seven hits, walked one and gave up two runs.
"Katie really stepped up for us," said Sarchett. "I put the ball in her hands, and she responded well. She kept us in the game long enough for us to put runs on the board. She has been in pressure situations before, and she knows when the pressure is on to just play her game."
HSU notched double-digit hits for the first time this month and finished with 11.
Tiffany Hollingsworth led the way with a team-high three hits.
