Box Score BELMONT, Calif. – For the second time on Friday, the Humboldt State volleyball team won its first two sets of the match. Unlike HSU's morning 5-3 win over Academy of Arts, the Lumberjacks completed the three-set sweep in the nightcap over Notre Dame de Namur.
"The team definitely settled down this evening after a shaky morning," said Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "We played very efficiently against Notre Dame. Our serve receive and defense were consistent, which led to a very good offensive night. We hit .362 as a team, which is excellent."
The Jacks jumped out to a quick 11-3 advantage in the opening set, and pushed it to double-figures at 17-7 when
Jessica Lammers set up
Nicole Bewley for the kill. At 21-10, the Argunauts won nine of the next ten points to bring it to 22-19. The Green and Gold responded with the set's final three points, courtesy of a
Sarah Shively ace sandwiched between kills by Bewley and
Alex Hasenstab.
Despite trailing 5-4 to open the second set, the Jacks strung together five consecutive points to retake the lead, 9-5. Notre Dame tightened the gap, bringing the score to 17-16, before HSU closed out the set with eight of the final ten points to win 25-18.
Humboldt State jumped out early again in the third set, taking five of the first six points.
Morgan Psalmonds doubled the HSU advantage when her service ace gave the Green and Gold an 18-9 lead. There was no looking back as the Jacks closed out the set and match, winning 25-17.
Symone Hayden led all players in kills for the second time in as many games, tallying 14.
Katherine Rifilato added 24 assists in the win.
Two games are scheduled for Saturday, with the Jacks playing Dominican at 11 a.m. and closing the Route 92 Showdown at 4:30 p.m. against Holy Names.
