Two Late Goals Lift Men’s Soccer Over Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. – Two late goals lifted Humboldt State men's soccer to its first conference victory of the season, 3-2, over Stanislaus State Friday.

The Lumberjacks improved to 3-3-1 on the season and 1-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Stanislaus fell to 0-4-3 overall and 0-3 in conference action.

"Today was a great game for our guys, and not just because of the result," said head coach Fred Jungemann. "We played well for long stretches of the game and showed some serious resilience by coming from behind on the road. Stanislaus is a very strong team and put us under pressure throughout the game. It was a result our guys worked hard for and will enjoy."

Max Steinmetz got Humboldt State on the board in the 49th minute on a free kick that served as his first goal of the season and gave the Jacks a 1-0 advantage.

Stanislaus responded with two goals in a three-minute stretch to retake the lead, 2-1, midway through the second half. Jaime Ceja was responsible for the Warriors' second goal in the 61st minute.

Humboldt State bounced back with two goals of its own in the stretch of a little more than a minute. Trice Smith connected on a throw in from Steinmetz in the 83rd minute, and Mumbi Kwesele put home a penalty kick in the 84th minute that turned out to be the game winner.

The Warriors fell short despite outshooting the Jacks 22-8 in the contest.

Humboldt State will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 25th at 2 p.m. when they take on Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
