HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay defeated Humboldt State men's soccer 2-1 in an overtime thriller Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops HSU to 3-4-1 overall and to 1-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
"Today was a tough loss on a hot, difficult day," said head coach
Fred Jungemann. "East Bay put us under a lot of pressure, particularly in the second half. We dealt with it well for the most part and created plenty of chances for ourselves to put the game away. In the end, a few small mistakes at both ends of the field ended up costing us points today."
East Bay outshot the Jacks 13-8 in the match, including a 9-3 advantage in the second half.
HSU took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from
Johan Muliadi, assisted by
Jason Schmidt, in the 23rd minute.
The Lumberjacks held onto the lead until Preston Hale of East Bay scored just seconds before the 73-minute mark to tie the game.
The Pioneers struck again early in overtime when Victor Calderon found the back of the net for the game-winning goal in the 94th minute.
HSU looks to get back on track next weekend when they take on Cal State San Marcos (Friday, Sept. 30) and UC San Diego (Sunday, Oct. 2).
