Volleyball takes first loss of 2016 to Dominican

HAYWARD, Calif. – Following two wins on Friday, Humboldt State volleyball (2-1) dropped its first match of the season Saturday morning to Dominican (3-0). The two West Region teams split the first two sets, before Dominican closed it out in four (25-17, 18-25, 28-26, 25-21).

"This morning we lost to a talented Dominican team," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "Our serve recieve was not good enough and we became too predictable offensively. We expect to bounce to back back tonight against Holy Names."

With Dominican ahead 8-6 in the opening set, the Lumberjacks rattled off six consecutive points capped by Katherine Rifilato's service ace. The Penguins had an answer, however, taking the next six points and the lead, 13-12. The Dominican lead grew to 24-15, and the Penguins finished the set with a 25-17 win.

HSU responded quickly in the second set, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage. The lead grew to seven, 17-10, on one of Symone Hayden's team-high 13 kills. Dominican could not cut its deficit down below five for the remainder of the set, and the Green and Gold closed it out 25-18.

The third set featured back and fourth action with both teams holding leads of three points on several occasions throughout the set. With the Penguins holding a 22-19 edge, HSU strung together four consecutive points to retake the lead, 23-22. The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the set, tying the score four additional times through 26 apiece before Dominican was able to win, 28-26.

Needing a win in the fourth set to extend the match, the Jacks capitalized on five straight points to go ahead 15-12. The resilient Penguins tied the score at 19-all before going ahead, 22-19, and closing out the set and match 25-21.

The Jacks will wrap up the Route 92 Tournament with a final game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Holy Names.
