ARCATA, Calif. – It will be a clash of nationally-ranked, unbeaten programs this weekend in Redwood Bowl. No. 13 Humboldt State hosts No. 24 Azusa Pacific in its home opener Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
"We are excited to be at home," said Head Coach
Rob Smith. "I think we have this community excited because of last year's success and this year's start. We have the best game day atmosphere of any home field in the conference, so let's hope that we can pack the Redwood Bowl and have a standing-room-only crowd."
The Lumberjacks (1-0) opened the season with a 52-45 road win over Carson-Newman. The high-scoring game featured 1,183 yards of total offense, 370 of which came from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week
Robert Webber.
"I have said this before, but I would not trade
Robert Webber for any other quarterback that I've seen at the Division II level," said Smith. "His understanding of our offense, his ability to expand his vision and see the field and see from sideline to sideline has improved tremendously from this time a year ago. I saw that in the spring and commented on that. I just felt he had taken his game to another level and certainly that's what we saw last week at Carson-Newman."
Azusa Pacific opened its season with a 28-10 victory against West Texas A&M in Citrus Stadium. The Cougars (1-0) limited their opponent to just 40 rushing yards and the defense came up with three takeaways (two interceptions and one fumble recovery). Mykal Walker was the defense's top playmaker and finished with a team-leading 11 tackles and an interception.
"This is a rivalry game," said Smith. "There are only two Division II programs in the state of California and those two will be on the field Saturday. We know that if we are going to win the conference again, we are going to have to do so by dealing with Azusa Pacific."
The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a free rally towel courtesy of tri counties bank.
