Women’s Basketball Wins Third Straight in Double-Overtime Thriller

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Ashlynn Cox made a layup as the second overtime period expired to clinch Humboldt State's third straight win, a 60-59 victory over Cal State San Marcos Saturday in The Sports Center.

With eight seconds left in double overtime, HSU's Allison Zalin sank a 3-pointer to knot the game at 68-68. Savannah Camp sank a free throw on the ensuing possession to give the Cougars (8-7, 5-5 CCAA) a one-point lead before the game-winning basket.

"I thought our defense in the first half was good, but we never got into a flow offensively," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I knew things would start clicking for us offensively, and we had to continue to rely on our half-court defense. We got down in the fourth quarter, but we have one resilient basketball team. These girls just continued to fight, even when we had our backs against the wall."

The Jacks improved to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

Tyra Turner led the Green and Gold with 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. She was 7-of-14 shooting, went 1-for-3 from 3-point range and was 3-of-8 at the free-throw line.

HSU trailed by 10 to start the fourth quarter, but Turner and Cox combined for 10 of the Jacks' 18 points to force overtime. Cox finished the game with 12 points and six boards.

"I am not surprised to see this fight from the team," said Bento-Jackson. "Even tonight when we were down 10, I never was concerned or worried. And I think the girls have a lot of confidence that we can get out of these holes."

The North Coast team returns to Lumberjack Arena to face rival Chico State Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
