HAYWARD, Calif. – Humboldt State women's basketball lost to Cal State East Bay 70-45 Friday night in Pioneer Gymnasium.
The Lumberjacks (6-13, 5-7 CCAA) trailed from start to finish against one of the California Collegiate Athletic Association's hottest teams. Four scorers reached double figures as the Pioneers (12-7, 9-3 CCAA) captured their fourth straight win.
"I am very disappointed in our lack of effort, discipline and competitiveness tonight," said HSU Head Coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We never seemed to get things going. It is no surprise that we got the results that we did when all the intangible things were not in place. I must get our team mentally prepared for a quick turnaround and preparing for Monterey Bay tomorrow."
East Bay shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, and the Pioneers used a 7-2 run before intermission to take a 35-24 lead into the break.
Tyra Turner scored the first five points of the third quarter to trim the East Bay lead to six, 35-29, before the home team started another run to put the Jacks away for good.
The Pioneers led by as many as 25 points in the second half and shot 53.8 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. East Bay's Marianne Fernandez led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Riann Thayer grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and scored nine points for the Green and Gold. Turner finished with a team-high four assists and three steals.
The Jacks outrebounded the Pioneers 35-31.
HSU continues its road trip Saturday with a stop in Seaside, Calif. Tipoff versus Cal State Monterey Bay is set for 5:30 p.m.
