Men’s Soccer Wins Double Overtime Thriller Versus Cougars

ARCATA, Calif. - On the strength of a Francisco "Frankie" Calderon tally at 101:56 of the second overtime session, HSU men's soccer provided its fans a 2-1 win over Cal State San Marcos in heartstopping fashion on Sunday at College Creek Field. Calderon's goal was unassisted, a strong finish in the box put into the right side of the net.

"Every point you get in this conference is a battle and today is a perfect example," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "San Marcos fought hard from start to finish and the game could easily have gone either way. Our guys worked really hard today as well and I couldn't be more proud of their effort."

The Jacks got behind early as San Marcos' Victor Gonzalez scored off an assist from Bryan Morrison at 8:20, but HSU put the pressure on and rallied to tie it up at 12:26 off a San Marcos own goal.

The teams battled through a scoreless second half and first overtime session before Calderon came up with the game-winner on his fourth shot of the day, two of them on goal. Isaiah Dairo notched four shot attempts, with three on goal, and Mumbi Kwesele had five shots, two on goal. On the day, HSU had 18 shots, with goalkeeper Chris Cherms turning aside eight San Marcos attempts.

"We got behind early again, but we showed our spirit and tied up the game before half," said Jungemann. "Frankie Calderon came up huge with the game winner and also played a big part in our first goal. It's a great result for our guys though, after five tough losses in a row."

HSU improved its record to 7-6, 4-5 in the CCAA, and will next take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at home on Friday at 3 p.m., before hosting another CCAA opponent in Cal State LA on Sunday at 2 p.m.
