Women’s Basketball Opens CCAA Road Play With Win Against Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Getting back in the win column in a big way, Humboldt State women's basketball got to the line 40 times and converted 33 of those free throws en route to a 70-57 win over Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.

The win spoiled the Coyotes' home conference debut and what had previously been a 1-0 CCAA record. HSU's victory makes them 1-1 in conference and 2-5 overall.

Tyla Turner led the Lumberjacks with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Mikaela Shannon had 11 points and Kindall Murie and Isamar Conde both contributed 10.

"It is good to get a conference road win," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "For about 32 minutes of the game I thought we did some good things, especially in executing our game plan. However, throughout the game I felt we were sloppy with the ball and made way too many careless turnovers. I was glad to see the team finish off the game, but we cannot have spurts like we had tonight in the fourth quarter. We did a tremendous job getting to the free throw line and knocking them down."

HSU led 15-12 at the end of a tightly-contest first quarter, and the second quarter saw that tug of war continue. The Coyotes took a 30-29 lead with 3:44 left in the second, but the Jacks finished the first half strong and carried a 37-33 advantage into the locker room.

Beginning at the 6:41 mark of the third period, the Jacks started to separate, with a 13-1 run that gave them a 55-40 lead heading into the fourth. After a Madeline Hatch three-pointer pushed the Jacks' lead to 20 with 8:00 left, San Bernardino got within 60-52 at the 3:34 mark, but would make no further progress. Overall, HSU led 86 percent of the time in the contest.

Next up for the Jacks are two more road CCAA contests beginning with Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
