Upper Iowa Edges Men’s Basketball 60-55

ORANGE, Calif. – Humboldt State men's basketball ended its stay in Southern California competing in the Disney Tip-Off Classic with a 60-55 loss to Upper Iowa Sunday afternoon.

The Lumberjacks slipped to 1-2 overall with the non-conference result.

HSU was ice cold offensively in the first half and trailed 31-22 at the break. Eight turnovers and a 22.6 shooting percentage contributed to the North Coast team trailing for a majority of the first half. Omajae Smith led the squad with eight points in the first 20 minutes.

"Upper Iowa is a great basketball team that went 3-0 at this tournament, and you have to give them credit for shutting us down," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "They are a veteran, senior team that got us down early and a lot later. They got us to where we lost confidence in scoring. To our guys' credit, they came back in the second half. Everybody contributed to the comeback and we had a chance to win it."

The deficit ballooned to 22 points with 12:59 left to play, but the Jacks rallied and trimmed Upper Iowa's lead to single digits with 3 minutes left. A Jack Kaub layup with 13 seconds remaining pulled the Jacks within two points. The Peacocks connected on three free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.

After consecutive double-digit scoring performances to start the season, Tyras Rattler Jr. was limited to eight points on 3-of-8 shooting. He scored seven points in the second half.

Colin Caslick joined Rattler as one of the team's top second half contributors. The senior from Lake Oswego, Ore., was 4-of-7 shooting and connected on a pair of 3-pointers for a team-high 11 points.

"I am really proud of Colin," said Kinder. "He comes in like a World Series relief pitcher, you just don't know when he will get the call. He does a great job of making plays, and he was the spark of our comeback. I am proud of him for being patient, coming off the bench and being a leader on this team."

The Jacks finished the game with a 30.8 field goal percentage and they were 3-of-23 (13 percent) from outside the arc.

HSU hosts Pacific Union on Monday, Nov. 13 in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

"We are going to try to figure out how to make baskets, exclamation point," said Kinder when asked what the team needs to improve on heading into a bye week. "We aren't shooting very well from the 3-point line, we need the right people taking those shots. We need to refine roles and that was exactly what this weekend did for us. It gave us an identity and a direction. Not too many teams in the United State have had the luxury of playing three games yet. We are fortunate to be one of those teams. We need to spend more time practicing free-throw shooting, but I am very proud of how we rebounded. I see that continuing."
