Women’s Basketball Resumes CCAA Action With Homestand

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – Putting its five-game winning streak on the line, the Humboldt State women's basketball team hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday at 5:30 p.m. to kick off a two-game homestand. The team will also host Cal State LA Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The squad has not lost since a Nov. 21 date with Western Oregon in a game that came down to the final seconds before the home team notched a 64-62 victory. On every occasion the team has taken the court since, they have emerged with a double-digit win to bring them to 5-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson acknowledged the challenges faced when a team has a significant amount of momentum and then is forced to deal with the lengthy holiday break. She referred to it as "a little bit of an uneasy feeling," and said that in the two days of preparation the girls will have for the Dominguez Hills game, "I have to make sure they're focused and we have two very productive days of practice and we need to go hard with intense practices to get ready for Dominguez Hills."

Bento-Jackson put special emphasis on the squad "executing the scout" and sharing the ball better each and every game, saying the team has a long way to go offensively, but must maintain the defensive intensity they've shown in their winning streak.

Tyla Turner has led the team to this point in the season with 17.2 points per game, and Bento-Jackson said that Isamar Conde is coming along as well, with Kindall Murie providing a valued contribution in the Sonoma State game right before the break. Murie went 5-of-9 from three-point range and scored 17 points. Bento-Jackson made it clear that the Jacks would need production from more than just one or two players moving forward to be a threat on the offensive end.

Cal State Dominguez Hills brings in a 7-5 overall record and an impressive 5-2 mark in conference, having dispatched UC San Diego 73-63 in their last game before the break. "We certainly have our challenges," said Bento-Jackson. "Individually, they have a lot of talent and they provide weapons on both the inside and outside. As always, our defense has to be on-point and we have to take them out of what they want to do offensively."

Bento-Jackson said taking care of the ball would be paramount, as "a key factor for us will be having low turnovers. Obviously, that's always a key, but against Dominguez Hills I think that's really going to be a factor for us to have success on the offensive end."

Bento-Jackson said Dominguez Hills has the potential to extend to a full-court press at times, as well as run two defenders out at the ball in the half-court, something that HSU has not seen yet this year. The trapping style in the half-court and a zone defense are things that the Jacks will have to be ready to deal with in attempting to establish their offense.

Cal State LA will bring in a 5-8 overall record and a 4-3 conference mark to Sunday's matchup.
