Women's Basketball Captures Sixth Straight Win Against Toros

ARCATA, Calif. – Reeling off its sixth consecutive win Friday night at Lumberjack Arena, Humboldt State's women's basketball team dispatched visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 78-70.

The Jacks move to 6-1 in CCAA conference play with the win, and now boast a 4-1 mark in their home venue. The result was especially significant because Dominguez Hills brought in a 5-2 conference record, nipping at the Jacks' heels in conference play.

The Jacks were led by Isamar Conde's 16 points and seven rebounds, as she continued a run of sterling play as of late. Tyla Turner also managed seven rebounds to go with her 14 points, and Jovanah Arrington scored 14 off the bench and hit 3-of-6 from distance. Tyra Turner also chipped in 14 on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.

"It's really rewarding because I think everybody did a little bit of what they needed to over our Christmas break," said Arrington. "And we came back and practiced hard."

The squads were tied at the break, but the Jacks came out strong in the third period, outscoring their counterparts 25-17.

"I think it was our halftime talk, and people just being in the right places at the right times, making the right cuts and passes" said Arrington. "It was a combination of both."

HSU was bolstered by its 51 percent shooting from the floor and its 42 points in the paint in the contest.

"In the first half, I really wasn't pleased with our half-court defense," said Lumberjack Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "I thought we were having some defensive errors that weren't really characteristic of us. But I thought we came out in the third quarter very, very well and got them back on their heels a little bit. As I told the team, this game is a game of runs, and I knew Dominguez Hills was going to go on a run at some point. We did get a little sloppy with the ball [the Lumberjacks had 18 turnovers], but I thought we did a great job of weathering the storm and really keeping our composure at the very end."

Coach Bento-Jackson said she was pleased that in the second half, her squad cleaned up its defensive efforts by not allowing Dominguez Hills uncontested looks at the hoop. She also commended her team for handling the full-court press from Dominguez Hills that she knew they would see.

"Jovanah Arrington and Mikaela Shannon were both huge for us tonight," said Coach Bento-Jackson. "I thought they both gave us a huge spark on both ends of the floor, and this was a great team win."

The Lumberjacks now await Cal State LA on Sunday, with a tip time of 1 p.m. at Lumberjack Arena.

Asked how her squad could continue its winning ways, Coach Bento-Jackson had one word: "Focus. Obviously, we do have a day to prepare. It's going to be a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, which is going to be a little bit different for both teams, but really, we just take this thing one game at a time, learning from each game."

"Like I told them, it's who's going to be the most disciplined basketball team tonight," said Bento-Jackson. "I'm just really proud of the team and how we responded."
