Stanislaus State Outlasts Men’s Basketball 67-62

ARCATA, Calif. – In a game that featured 15 lead changes the Humboldt State men's basketball team fought hard, but fell short against visiting Stanislaus State, 67-62, Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

The Lumberjacks kept pace with the Warriors in the first half behind a stellar effort from their bench. Five reserves contributed 14 of the Jacks' 31 first half points and helped the squad play Stanislaus State to a 31-31 tie at intermission. Davasyia Hagger led the way with seven points, while Tyras Rattler Jr. and Jalen Terry both chipped in five points for the home team.

"At halftime I thought our guys had good fire in the locker room," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "I thought our energy was good, probably the best of the year coming out of halftime."

Stanislaus State opened the second half on a 9-0 run and increased its lead to a game-high 10 points with 16 minutes left to play. Kameron Curl led the Jacks' comeback attempt with 13 of his season-high 16 points after the break. Curl was fouled on a 3-point attempt with under a minute left in regulation and connected on three ensuing free throws to pull HSU within two points, 64-62, but that was as close as the home team got to a come-from-behind victory.

"During the runs and times that we were down throughout the game and the season we have never had a lack of heart, desire or courage," said Kinder. "We have always played hard, and you can't fault our guys for that."

Rattler joined Curl in double figures with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting.

"I thought Kameron was calm, cool, collected and showed a lot of poise," said Kinder. "His teammates believe in him and so does our coaching staff."

HSU hosts Menlo College Sunday in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

"Our No. 1 goal on Sunday is getting a win," said Kinder. "A focal point will be playing more assist basketball, which is something we didn't do tonight."
