Women’s Basketball Tops Warriors, Wins Fourth Straight

ARCATA, Calif. – Led by an aggressive defense that forced 15 Stanislaus State turnovers in the first half, Humboldt State's women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to four games with a 77-59 victory over the Warriors on Thursday night at Lumberjack Arena.

"We've been relying on our defense, and our defense has really been setting the tone," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "For instance, tonight our goal was to take six charges and I believe we took six if not six-plus. That was something that was our mindset going into this ballgame and the girls executed."

Tyla Turner, coming off her CCAA Conference Player of the Week nod, contributed 19 points and nine rebounds, while Isamar Conde scored 14, hitting on 4-of-6 from three-point range. Mikaela Shannon provided an inside presence while knocking down all five of her free throws in an 11-point night.

"I think Tyla is just growing and maturing as a player more and more each game," said Bento-Jackson. "She has the ability to be a scorer and obviously we don't want to take that away from her. We want her to stay in an aggressive mindset, and at the same time she needs to have a balance in distributing the ball. I think she's getting better and better at that each game."

Regarding Conde's performance, Bento-Jackson touted her versatility in playing roles on both ends of the court: "Isa has really turned the corner, and been so solid for us, really consistent. Going back to the charges, I think she took three of the six, and she's just having a great balance to her game. She's a great offensive player, and sometimes I've got to get on her about shooting the ball even more."

The Lumberjacks were up by just two at the first-quarter break, but used a 23-13 second period to capture a 39-27 halftime advantage, holding the Warriors to 25 percent shooting in the half.

Stanislaus State managed to outscore HSU in the third, 22-19, but the final quarter saw the Jacks finish strong, besting the Warriors 19-10 on their way to a 77-59 result.

The final pushed the Jacks' record to 5-5 overall, 4-1 CCAA, and the squad now has a substantial break before hosting Sonoma State on Saturday, Dec. 16.
