ARCATA, Calif. – Malik Morgan and
Nikhil Lizotte combined for 43 points as Humboldt State men's basketball snapped Cal Poly Pomona's six-game winning streak, 71-60, Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.
"Whenever you play Cal Poly Pomona you are facing one of the best defenses in the West Region," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "It's a chess match each and every time you face them."
Morgan scored 11 of his team-high 22 points in the first half, as he helped the Jacks overcome a six-point deficit in the last five minutes. He connected on four free throws down the stretch, which allowed HSU to trim the Pomona advantage to 23-22 at the break.
"Malik steps up in big games, and he certainly did that tonight," said Kinder. "He has been a warrior every time we take the floor. His leadership ability and communication was at a high level. He was really positive with his teammates, and I am very proud of what he accomplished this evening."
The second half featured eight lead changes and six ties. Lizotte provided the lift the Jacks needed following intermission. He scored 14 points in the final 20 minutes, including seven from the charity stripe in the last minute.
HSU led by as many as 11 points in the second half and shot 55.6 percent from the field.
The Jacks outrebounded the Broncos 39-31, and
Calvin Young II grabbed a team-best eight boards. Young also recorded three of the Green and Gold's four blocks.
Jordan Ogundiran and Jeremy Dennis were Pomona's top scorers, and they finished with 14 points apiece.
HSU travels to face Cal State San Bernardino on Friday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
"This win gives us a lot of confidence as we head back out on the road," said Kinder. "We need that confidence, because it's not easy on the road."
