ARCATA, Calif. – Strong pitching and timely hitting added up to a sweep for the No. 1 team in the nation as Humboldt State softball took two from San Francisco State Saturday afternoon at SFSU Softball Field.
The Lumberjacks (9-0, 4-0 CCAA) won the early game, 2-0, and closed out the series with a 5-3 victory in the nightcap.
HSU travels to face Stanislaus State in Turlock, Calif., beginning Friday, March 3. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.
GAME ONE
(Humboldt State 2, SF State 0)
Madison Williams took the circle in the third game of the series and put together another dominating performance. She tossed a complete game shutout and matched her season-high with 11 strikeouts.
HSU plated both of its runs in the second inning.
Kalyn Paque led off the inning with a double, stole third and scored on a
Mariah Tovar sacrifice bunt. With two outs,
Winona Vigil reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher, swiped second and came home on a two-base error.
Paque finished the game with a pair of hits.
GAME TWO
(Humboldt State 5, SF State 3)
SF State got on the board first in the series finale. Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom half of the third, HSU got RBI hits from
Sydney Roberts and
Breonna Bejaran to even the score. Paque drew a walk with the bases loaded to give the Green and Gold a 3-2 lead.
A sacrifice fly in the fourth tied the game at 3-3, but the Jacks weren't ready to let the Gators back into the ball game. A leadoff home run from Bejaran in the bottom of the fifth broke the tie, and a Vigil RBI single three batters later put the North Coast team up 5-3.
Paque got the start and the win. She logged 5.0 innings, surrendered seven hits and three earned runs. Williams closed out the game with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief and earned her first save of the season.
Roberts, Bejaran, Vigil and
Illa Haley all had multi-hit performances in the win.
