Softball Opens March Schedule with Series Against Warriors

LIVE STATS | LIVE VIDEO

ARCATA, Calif. – No. 1-ranked Humboldt State softball travels to Turlock, Calif., this weekend to face Stanislaus State.

The series against the Warriors will start Friday at 3 p.m. All four games will have live stats and video, and links are available above the preview.

HSU is off to a 9-0 start for the first time since the 2014 season, which opened with 10 straight wins. The Lumberjacks are the No. 1 team in the nation for the third consecutive week and collected all 16 first-place votes for the second straight week.

Pitching has been the key to HSU's early success. The Green and Gold have limited opponents to one run or less in six of nine games this season, and the staff boasts a 1.75 ERA. Madison Williams was tabbed the California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season Tuesday. She went 2-0 with a save and 23 strikeouts in three appearances last week versus San Francisco State. The senior has a 5-0 record with a 0.45 ERA and a 7:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

At the plate, three Lumberjacks are batting better than .400. Illa Haley leads the team with a .450 batting average with a team-high four home runs and 13 RBI. Kalyn Paque was an impact player for the Green and Gold last week in the circle and at the dish. She batted .400, drove in a run and swiped three bases to go with a 2-0 pitching record. HSU continues to manufacture runs with elite speed on the bases. Kelly Sonnemann, who has split time catching and playing centerfield, leads the team with nine stolen bases in nine attempts.

Stanislaus State is 9-5 overall and 5-3 in conference play. The Warriors dropped three of four games at Sonoma State last weekend. Ruby Quiralte is the team's top hitter with a .375 batting average, 17 RBI and six extra-base hits. Four pitchers have logged starts for the Warriors through 14 games, and Anyssa Garvin has been their most effective starter with a 2-1 record and a 1.95 ERA.

HSU leads the all-time series with Stanislaus State 112-14, and the Jacks have won the last eight meetings.
