Williams Tosses No-Hitter, Leads Jacks to Doubleheader Sweep

HAYWARD, Calif. – Madison Williams tossed her second career no-hitter and the Lumberjacks scored eight of their combined nine runs after the sixth inning as Humboldt State swept a doubleheader against Cal State East Bay Monday afternoon.

Williams guided the Green and Gold to a 6-1 victory in game one, and Kalyn Paque provided the pitching and the bat necessary to top the Pioneers, 3-1, in the second game.

HSU improved to 14-1 overall and 9-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play following Monday's twinbill.

"Wins are wins, and that's all that matters," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "A good team will find a way and that is what our girls are doing. Our girls showed a lot of heart by staying in both games."

A difficult first inning in the opener gave East Bay a 1-0 lead. Lead off batter Courtney Lebya reached on a two-base error, moved to third after a ground out and came home on a wild pitch.

Tiffany Hollingsworth plated the speedy Kelly Sonnemann in the third with a squeeze play that evened the score at 1-1.

In the top of the seventh, Hollingsworth drove in the go-ahead run with another bunt and HSU tallied five consecutive hits to capture the win. Lauren Lipe recorded an RBI double in the seventh and went 3-of-4 at the dish in her first career start.

Williams fanned seven and walked one in the no-hitter. The senior's last no-hitter was in the third game of the 2016 campaign against Colorado State-Pueblo.

"Maddie threw a great game today," said Sarchett. "She was really able to keep a good hitting East Bay team off balance all day. It was great to see her put the other day behind her and come out and do her thing."

East Bay's Marisa Lerma broke up the pitcher's duel in the nightcap with an RBI double in the fourth inning. She finished the game with two of the Pioneers' five hits.

A Lona Dengler RBI double scored Paque from first base in the sixth frame to tie the game at 1-1.

Her first hit of the game proved to be the most important as Paque drove a full-count pitch over the left centerfield fence to put the Green and Gold ahead 3-1 in the top of the eighth.

Paque logged 8.0 innings, surrendered five hits, struck out three and an earned run. The Reno, Nev., native collected her seventh victory in as many starts.

A weekend homestand against Cal State Dominguez Hills awaits the Green and Gold. Game one of the four-game series is scheduled for Friday, March 10 at noon. Fans are reminded to check back with HSULumberjacks.com regularly for schedule updates, game recaps and more.
