ARCATA, Calif. – No. 1-ranked Humboldt State softball will compete at home this weekend for the first time this season when they take on Cal State Dominguez Hills and Dominican University.
"I think at this point we're just anxious to still be playing ball," said Head Coach
Shelli Sarchett. "If we had to go on the road this week, I think they'd be just fine with that."
The Lumberjacks will play a four-game series with the Toros starting Friday at noon, then will finish up the weekend with a doubleheader against Dominican Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
HSU enters the weekend 14-1 overall and 9-1 in CCAA play. For the fourth consecutive week the Jacks remain No. 1 in the nation after collecting 14 of the 16 possible first-place votes in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
Pitching continues to be a strong point for the Jacks as starters
Madison Williams and
Kalyn Paque have combined for a 1.38 ERA. Williams tossed her second career no-hitter Monday and has a team-high 62 strikeouts. Paque has started the year off 7-0 with three complete games. She has an ERA of 1.74 and has only surrendered five walks in 40.1 innings pitched.
At the plate,
Breonna Bejaran,
Illa Haley and
Winona Vigil continue their hot starts. Bejaran leads the Jacks with a .396 batting average and shares the team lead for home runs with five. Haley also has five homers and is batting .366. Vigil ranks second on the team with a .375 batting average and has 10 stolen bases.
Cal State Dominguez Hills is 1-16 overall and 0-12 in conference play. They are currently on a 14-game losing streak.
"Dominguez Hills is not having a very good season, but we cannot play to that level," said Sarchett. "We have to continue to treat them like they are the No. 1 team in the nation. If we let our guard down or we let them think that they're going to be in the game, then they're going stay in the game."
Dominican enters the weekend 6-10 overall. They will face Cal Baptist Thursday in Riverside, Calif., before making the trip to the North Coast.
