HSU'S Bats Come Alive in Game Two, Earning a Split Against Chico State

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif.- No.1 Humboldt State Softball split its day one doubleheader against No.13 Chico State Monday afternoon. Chico State took game one 2-0, while HSU bounced back claiming game two 10-4.
 
After the split the both teams sit at 29-8 overall on the season. The Lumberjacks 17-7 in conference play, the Wildcats 19-7 in its conference matchups.
 
In game one the Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Lumberjack miscue on a double steal which allowed a run to score and the other to advance to third. Chico brought home its second run on a fielder's choice to second base off the bat of Ari Marsh.
 
Haley Gilham was able to keep HSU off balance at the plate all game as she only allowed two hits on her way to her 17th victory of the season. Madison Williams was very solid in the circle for the Jacks as she only allowed 4 hits while striking out ten batters on her way to her 15th complete game of the season.
 
In game two the Lumberjacks bats came alive as a Tiffany Hollingsworth single through the right side in the bottom of the first put HSU's first run on the board. In the top of the third Chico took a 3-1 lead on a 2rbi single by Claire Wayne. The Lumberjacks answered in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run by Sydney Roberts leaving the game tied at 3.
 
In the top of the fourth the Wildcats answered with a home run of their own taking a 4-3 lead. HSU responded once again, this time putting up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. Kalyn Paque retired the side on the top of the fifth before the Lumberjacks exploded for four more runs in the bottom half of the inning extending its lead to 10-4. HSU went on to take game two 10-4.
 
With the win Paque improved to 13-2 on the season and went the distance for the eighth time.
 
No.1 HSU is back in action tomorrow with two more games scheduled against No.13 Chico State. First pitch in game one is set for 11am at McKinleyville High School.
