ARCATA, Calif. – After reeling off eight straight wins Humboldt State softball has returned to its target destination – the 2017 NCAA Division II Softball Championship. The Green and Gold will face No. 1 seed Angelo State Thursday at 9 a.m. PT in Salem, Va.
HSU clinched a return trip to nationals following Friday's Super Regional victory against Dixie State. The Lumberjacks overcame a four-run deficit in the 8-6 decision and leaned on a strong pitching performance from
Kalyn Paque. The senior relieved starter
Madison Williams after 1.2 innings and tossed 5.2 frames of two-hit ball.
Saturday's win earned the Jacks their second consecutive West Region title and their eighth overall. HSU was tabbed the No. 8 seed in the National Championships following the conclusion of regional play.
Angelo State enters the tournament after spending the final five weeks of the regular season as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's No. 1 team. The Rambelles are 57-5 overall and winners of five straight. Four Rambelles earned NFCA All-Region honors including utility pitcher Kenedy Urbany and pitcher Brandy Marlett. Urbany is batting .325 to go with a 1.17 ERA and a 21-1 mark, while Marlett has a 1.25 ERA and a 28-4 record.
HSU has never faced Angelo State, but the Green and Gold met Lone Star Conference member West Texas A&M in last year's tournament. The Jacks have a 7-4 record against current LSC member institutions, and they went 1-1 versus West Texas A&M in 2016.
