HSU Miscues Costly in NCAA Softball Championship Opener

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

SALEM, Va. –
Angelo State took advantage of Humboldt State miscues and used the long ball to defeat the Lumberjacks 5-1 in Thursday's first game of the NCAA Division II Softball Championships.

"If we don't execute we're not going to win, and if we make mistakes we are not going to win," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "These are the best eight teams left in the country. We just got punched in the face, and it's about how we are going to come out and respond tomorrow."

Madison Williams silenced the Rambelles' bats through three innings, but Angelo State got on the board with a pair of homers in the fourth. Kenedy Urbany slugged a solo bomb to left field for the game's first run, and a throwing error extended the inning allowing a two-run homer from Danae Bina to make it a 3-0 Rambelles lead.

Angelo State added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. A fielding error by Sydney Roberts put runners at the corners following a leadoff single, and Bailey Wallace lifted a ball to left for the fourth run.

Tiffany Hollingsworth swatted a solo home run to left to break up the shutout in the sixth. Kalyn Paque followed up Hollingsworth's long ball with a stand-up double, but Courtney Barnhill's over-the-should catch on a hard-hit ball by Breonna Bejaran ended the rally. Hollingsworth's homer helped her break the program's career RBI record, surpassing Natalie Galletly with 224 runs batted in.

Rambelles ace Brandy Marlett kept the Green and Gold offense off balance all afternoon. Marlett allowed four hits, struck out four and walked two. She picked up her 29th win of the season.

A throwing error by Roberts in the bottom of the sixth spoiled Williams' attempt to escape a bases-loaded, no-out situation unscathed. The Rambelles had three consecutive singles, but Williams fanned Amanda Ramage before the low throw to home on a slow grounder put Angelo State up 5-1.

Williams tossed 6.0 innings, struck out eight, and surrendered six hits and three earned runs. She moved to 24-10 this season with the loss.

HSU will face Molloy College Friday at 1 p.m. PT.
