Pirates Power Eliminates Jacks from NCAA Softball Championship

POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

SALEM, Va. –
Tazha Williams crushed a two-out grand slam to right field in the top of the seventh to deal Humboldt State a 5-1 loss to Armstrong State Saturday afternoon at the Moyer Sports Complex.

"The team that took advantage of opportunities won. That's simply how it is," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "I wish Armstrong the best of luck, and today they were the better team. There's not much more to say, but that these girls should not hang their heads about what they have done this year. I am proud of them and, of course, proud of my seniors for setting our core and everyone else following around them. It just wasn't our day."

Madison Williams had tossed 13.2 innings of scoreless ball before Tazha Williams' bases-clearing shot. The senior from Brentwood, Calif., effortlessly worked through the first six frames before loading the bases in the seventh.

Trailing 0-2 in the count, Tazha Williams slugged the heartbreaker to right to put the Pirates up 4-0. Armstrong State added another run after a throwing error put Natalie Corbin on base, and she scored following a base hit and fielding miscue.

Jane Trzaska never allowed HSU to gets its offense going. The Pirates ace pitched a complete game two-hitter en route to her 19th victory.

The Lumberjacks managed just two hits in the elimination game. Breonna Bejaran flared a single to right field in the second inning and knocked a solo homer to left centerfield in the bottom of the seventh.

Madison Williams finished with 12 strikeouts, and she surrendered four earned runs and seven hits.

HSU ends the season with a 44-15 record and finishes fifth in the nation. Armstrong State advances to face Angelo State Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
