Softball Travels to Stockton for CCAA Tournament, Faces Coyotes Friday

CCAA Tournament Bracket (PDF)

ARCATA, Calif. – The Lumberjacks make their annual trip to Stockton for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Softball Tournament held at Arnaiz Stadium May 5-7. Humboldt State will face Cal State San Bernardino in the opening round Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Last season's tournament experience was forgettable as the Green and Gold went 0-2 and suffered an early exit before making an NCAA postseason run. But this year's team expects a different result.

"We are super excited to be there. We have one of the toughest conferences in the nation," said senior Breonna Bejaran. "The competition is so great, and when we play each other it makes for some great games. I think last year we were looking ahead to Regionals and Super Regionals already, because we were sitting pretty good at that time. Losing two games was a good eye-opener for us last season."

They Jacks believe they are peaking at the right time following a weekend split with No. 4-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay, the top seed in this weekend's tournament. HSU's offense has scored 10 or more runs in four of the team's last 10 games, including a season-high 17 in game one against the Otters.

"This weekend showed our team what it's capable of," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "It hopefully sparked the girls knowing that we can compete against one of the best teams in the nation. We need to keep that momentum going for the rest of the postseason. Now is a great time to peak and we just need to keep going from there."

HSU went 1-3 against San Bernardino during the regular season series. The Coyotes have a veteran roster that includes the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week in senior Cassandra Williams. The left-handed ace started in all but one game of the series, picking up a pair of wins and a save. She leads the Coyotes with a 22-10 record with a 1.54 ERA.

Monterey Bay and Chico State will face off in the early game on Friday, and the winners of Friday's games will meet Saturday at noon.
