STOCKTON, Calif. – Sydney Roberts hammered a solo home run to centerfield to lead Humboldt State softball to an eight-inning, 2-1 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in Saturday night's elimination game.
The Lumberjacks advance to the Championship round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. HSU will face Chico State Sunday at 10 a.m. in Arnaiz Stadium.
Lusi Stanley gave the Otters a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the first inning.
HSU struggled to generate offense against pitcher Hayley Fein, the CCAA Freshman of the Year. Fein limited the Green and Gold to just three hits through five innings.
Kalyn Paque put the Jacks on the board with an RBI double down the left field line in the sixth, and Roberts connected on her solo bomb in the eighth. HSU finished with just seven hits, and both Paque and
Lona Dengler recorded multi-hit performances.
In her second start of the afternoon, senior
Madison Williams ended up the winner of a pitcher's duel. She tossed 8.0 innings, allowed five hits and struck out five. Williams improved to 18-9 with the win.
