HAYWARD, Calif. -- Humboldt State men's soccer captured its fourth straight win with a double overtime 2-1 victory Friday night versus Cal State East Bay.
"Tonight was an exciting, entertaining game," said HSU Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "It's the third time in a row we have gone into OT when playing them here in Hayward. Our guys played some great soccer tonight. I couldn't be more proud of their performance, and it is the best all around game we have played since I've been at HSU."
The Lumberjacks tallied 10 shots in the first half, and
Ethan Waters got the Green and Gold on the board with a goal at 41:39.
Alejandro Cortes Garcia and
Mumbi Kwesele assisted on the goal.
Nine yellow cards were issued in the hotly contested conference opener, all of which came after the Jacks took their 1-0 lead.
East Bay's Evan Sanchez wove through the HSU defense and evened the game with a shot from outside the box over
Christopher Cherms' head at the 65:12 mark. Sanchez finished with three of the Pioneers' 10 shots.
Grant LaFleur attempted a shot on goal with 3 seconds left in regulation, and Cherms recorded a save to force overtime.
HSU and East Bay recorded two shots apiece in the first overtime period, but the game wasn't decided until the 104th minute.
Marco Silveira served up a pass over a Pioneer defender to
Isaiah Dairo who fired a cross-goal shot for the game winner.
"I'm really happy for Isaiah," said Jungemann. "Getting the game winner in front of his friends and family, in his home town, is something he won't forget. It was a good win that we will enjoy for tonight, but tomorrow we will focus on and start preparing for Sunday's game at Monterey Bay."
The Green and Gold return to action Sunday against Cal State Monterey Bay. The game is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
