SEASIDE, Calif. – A Humboldt State men's soccer team that has had a flair for the dramatic ran its record to 5-1 on Sunday as it defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 1-0.
Following a 2-1 double-overtime win over Cal State East Bay on Friday night, the HSU squad took until the 86:23 mark of the second half to strike pay dirt against Monterey Bay.
Isaiah Dairo found the back of the net with his second straight game-winner slotted into the left side of the goal past the diving goalkeeper off an assist from
Tyler Crandall.
"Playing in this conference is a grind, particularly when you are on the road," said Head Coach
Fred Jungemann. "If we are going to reach our goals, we have to find a way to get results when we are tired and not at our best. Today was a perfect example of that."
The Jacks have been on road for the first six games of the season and have won five straight. HSU relied on a stellar performance from goalkeeper
Christopher Cherms, who faced seven Monterey Bay shots on goal (out of 13 total shots for the home team) and kept a clean net. The North Coast team managed just two shots on goal out of its eight total shots, but found a way to eke out the win.
"We kept our composure and worked hard," said Jungemann, "Isaiah came up big with a late goal that made the difference. The defense played well again, and Cherms made some clutch saves to preserve the shutout and keep us in the game."
The Jacks finally get the chance to host a match on Sunday, Sept. 24, as they will have a conference date with a 1 p.m. start against Sonoma State.
