SEASIDE, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball dropped its conference-opening match against Cal State Monterey Bay in straight sets 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-10) Friday night in the Kelp Bed.
The loss, the Lumberjack's sixth straight, moves the team's record to 1-6 overall.
"Tonight's performance was as poor as we've played all season," said HSU Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "We were outplayed in every area."
HSU got out to a 6-1 start in the first set, but Monterey Bay scored seven of the next nine points to pull within striking distance. The Otters used a 7-0 run to take a 14-10 lead, and they led the rest of the way in the 25-16 set victory.
The next frame was close at the start, but once again the home team took advantage of the Jacks poor hitting. With the scored tied 4-4, the Otters took control with six straight points and won the set 25-14.
Monterey Bay dominated the third set improving on its .371 hitting percentage with .333 to close out the match. For the second consecutive frame the Jacks offense committed seven errors and fell short of expectations. Three ties early on were the best HSU could hope for in the 25-10 loss.
HSU visits Cal State East Bay Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
